Vroedvrouw

'Het water zal de stenen breken'.
Dat is de tekst die zowel op de grafsteen van Margré staat als op het omslag van het boek met ondertitel 'vroedvrouw in Gouda van 1985-1993'.Het boek is samengesteld met teksten 'in de hoop iets te behouden van de inspiratie die van haar uitging', aldus de samenstellers.
In de bundel staan artikelen van haar - de "Beschermvrouwe van het gezonde geboorteproces" met titels als "Bevallen, een natuurlijk en veilig gebeuren" en "De vroedvrouw en medische indicaties" . Daarnaast zijn er verhalen van collega's, kraamvrouwen, filosofen en gynaecologen in te vinden.

Het zou Margré deugd doen dat de thuisbevalling inmiddels officieel bij de Unesco een plek heeft gevonden als immaterieel erfgoed. Dat er inmiddels kraamhotels zijn en dat je kunt kiezen of je in bed, in bad of op een stoel bevalt.De harde werkelijkheid is echter dat er in Nederland nog maar 15 % van de bevalling thuis gebeurt, grotendeels door hoogopgeleide vrouwen. (De overgrote meerderheid bevalt poliklinisch of in het ziekenhuis.)

En dat het wereldwijde schrijnende tekort aan verloskundigen en vroedvrouwen alleen maar stijgt.

Those are the words we can find on the tombstone of Margré as well as on the cover of the book with subtitle 'midwife in Gouda from 1985-1993'. The book exists of texts 'in the hope that something will be saved from the inspiration that emanated from her' according to the compilers of the book. In this book there are articles by her hand - "the Patroness of the normal birth process" with titles like "Giving birth, a natural and safe process" and "The midwife and medical indications". Apart from that, stories can be found told by colleagues, women in childbed, philosophers and gynaecologists in this collection.

Margré would have been pleased to know that in our times a home birth is officially accepted by Unesco as intangible heritage. Moreover, nowadays we have maternity hotels and the possibility to choose if you want to give birth in bed, in a bath or on a chair. However, the harsh reality is that in the Netherlands only 15% of the childbirths take place at home, mostly by highly educated women.(The vast majority gives birth in an outpatient setting or in hospital). It is also distressing to know that worldwide there is a shortage of obstetricians and midwives and that this shortage is only increasing.
